There are four of us in my close family: my parents, my younger brother and me. We live in a fairly big detached house with five rooms both downstairs and upstairs. When you enter the house there is a hall that leads to the other rooms.

Downstairs there is a big living room which has three large windows and huge glass sliding doors leading to the terrace. My mother works at home, so the fourth room is her home office. My room is upstairs between my brother’s and my parents’ bedrooms. There is also a study for me and my brother, but sometimes our father spends his free time surfing the net there.

In my family, everybody has to do something and everybody is responsible for their own room. Sharing the housework is never easy, but we always try to help each other. It is my mum who does most of the housework in my family, although I could help her more.

I make my bed every morning, and it is my job to do the washing-up after meals. At weekends I dust the shelves in my room and hoover the flat. I also help with the cleaning, the laundry and watering the flowers. My brother and I clean our own rooms and take care of our dog.

My mother does most of the cooking and cleaning. She also goes shopping, but she often spends four or five hours at the weekend buying food and clothes. My father sometimes goes shopping and does the hard work around the house. He likes cooking, so while my mother works, he cooks.

My sister is especially good at cooking and she loves doing it. If my father has not got any time, my sister does the shopping. My grandfather is at home and helps my mother with the housework.

Personally, I do anything around the house, for example hanging out the washing, washing-up, cleaning and gardening. If I can, I help my family on weekdays, but usually I do the housework at weekends.

A házimunka megosztása a családban

We always share the work and try to help each other. My father does the hard work and he likes cooking, so while my mum works, he cooks. He often goes shopping, but if he has not got any time, my sister does it.

My mum works a lot, but if she does not work, she cleans the house and does the washing-up. It is my mum who does most of the housework in my family. I help with the cleaning and with the washing-up, and sometimes with the laundry, too.

My brother and I clean our own rooms and take care of our dog. It is my little sister’s job to water the plants, but she often forgets to do it, so I do it instead of her. For cutting the grass, we always ask a friend of the family.

We rarely iron our clothes in my family, just our shirts and my brother’s suit. My brother is into DIY and he can fix things easily, except the water taps. I can change the light bulbs as well and sometimes I clean the windows.

Feladatok, amelyeket szeretek vagy nem szeretek

What I prefer to do is gardening. I like the flowers and plants and I enjoy taking care of them. I also like baking and really enjoy ironing.

My friends find that surprising, but I do not mind ironing at all if there is some music on. I love helping with the cooking because I enjoy preparing food for my family.

I do not really like doing the washing-up and the washing, ironing and sweeping the floor. Although I hate dusting the furniture, hoovering or cleaning the windows, I have to do them sometimes.

I do not like doing the washing-up, especially washing big pots and pans. What I really hate is emptying the rubbish. The container next to the house is extremely dirty and sometimes there are mice around it.

I hate cleaning the windows because it is exhausting and I do not like always paying attention to see where there is a small piece of dirt on them. I also find shopping boring, although my mother can go to plenty of shops in one day.

A házimunka gyakorisága és napi rutin

I make my bed every morning. I usually do the tidying-up on Saturday or Sunday morning because I have time then. At weekends I dust the shelves in my room and hoover the flat.

I like to keep my place clean and tidy, so I always put my things back on the shelf and I have very well-organised drawers. I am responsible for keeping my own room in order.

There is always a lot to do at home, so I help my mother with watering the flowers, tidying up, cleaning up the mess and hanging out the washing. I also help with the washing-up after meals.

Háztartási gépek és eszközök

Fortunately, we have some labour-saving devices, like a Hoover, a microwave oven, a washing machine and a dishwasher. Using these household gadgets can make cooking and cleaning the house a lot easier.

We are environmentally conscious and we have energy-saving household devices. We have a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine, a microwave oven, mixers, blenders, an oven, a toaster, a percolator, a lawn mower and an electric drill.

We do not have a dishwasher, but according to my mum, we will buy one if we have enough space in the kitchen for it. I would like to have a dishwasher because I do not like washing up and I could save a lot of time.

A long time ago there were not many developed appliances, such as microwave ovens, hoovers, dishwashers or modern irons, so our grandparents did not have the easiest job. Today there are many devices which help with everyday housework.

There are kitchen appliances such as a blender and an exhaust fan, and in the bathroom there is a washing machine. Household appliances make everyday housework much easier, although some of them use a lot of water or electricity.

Nemek és generációk szerepe a házimunkában

When it comes to household chores, jobs like cleaning, washing clothes or looking after the children are often done mostly by women. Some families, however, try to split the work equally.

My wife works part time and I work full time, so when I am not working, I do things, and when she is not working, she does things. It is similar in many families: the family members try to share the tasks, but it is not always easy.

Figures from UN Women suggest that every day women around the world spend three hours more than men on unpaid care and domestic work. In some families, women are expected to do the cooking, cleaning, washing the dishes, looking after the children and taking care of older people.

Many cultures have a division of labour, which is a way of organising work where different tasks are done by different groups of people. However, the division of labour can be unfair if one person has to do most of the unpaid work.

Women also help out with work outside the home, for example in the fields. This means that they may work even harder because they have to do domestic chores as well as paid or physical work.
