Coffee is one of the world's most popular beverages, and it's served in countless ways around the globe. Among the best-known styles is espresso, a smaller-volume, highly concentrated version of the drink developed in the early 20th century. While it shares many similarities with more traditional brewed coffee, it differs in other areas, most notably size and strength. Generally speaking, a single shot of espresso constitutes 1 fluid ounce of liquid, equivalent to roughly 30 milliliters. In contrast, a standard cup of coffee is typically 8 ounces, or just under 237 milliliters.

However, common mug sizes can reach 12 or even 16 ounces, and travel mugs can be even larger. However, those who need a jolt of energy or a morning pick-me-up are often more concerned with caffeine content. While this varies depending on the beans and other brewing factors, most espresso shots contain anywhere between 60 and 80 milligrams of caffeine. In contrast, drip coffee contains 80 to 120 milligrams per 8-ounce cup, with pour-over methods producing as much as 175 milligrams. The significant difference in coffee and espresso's caffeine-to-volume ratios is what makes the latter so effective - and also potentially hazardous to your health. The FDA recommends no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, which translates to around 5 to 7 fluid ounces of espresso or 26 to 40 ounces of regular drip coffee.

These differences in serving size and relative strength aren't the only factors that distinguish espresso from typical coffee. Traditionally, "espresso roast" coffee is darker than many familiar medium or light roasts found on the market, although this has become less uniform over time. Coffee prepared for espresso is also ground finer than beans used in other methods. There's no denying that both of these size and strength measurements are mostly theoretical at many coffee shops and chains. Starbucks' "Tall" size, for example, is already one-and-a-half times as large as a standard cup of coffee (which is only available in an off-menu size), while commonly ordered "Grande" and "Venti" options include multiple espresso shots per drink.

If you drink your favorite roast using your go-to brewing method every day of the week, then you probably already know how to make a darn good cup of coffee. Some recipes call for shots, while some talk in terms of cups, grams, ounces, or scoops. Coffee measurements vary, depending on what drink you’re making and how you’re brewing it. Dark roast vs. light roast. Arabica beans or Robusta beans. It can get tricky because when most people talk about a “cup of coffee,” they’re referring to the vessel, the actual cup (or mug) they drink from. They are not referring to a one-cup measuring cup amount of coffee.

Some brewing machines require a certain amount of grounds, while others offer the flexibility to use as much or as little as you like. If your brewing method allows you to add as much as you like, you'll want to be sure to have a digital scale on hand. If you’re serious about your coffee, you need a digital scale. Never rely on the tablespoon utensil you eat soup or ice cream with as an accurate tablespoon measurement. Beans vary in size, depending on the type of bean and roast level. Coffee Beans: Whole vs. If you filled a measuring cup with whole beans to the one cup mark, you’d have about three ounces of coffee beans. Another cool thing you can do with those beans? Make coffee extract at home!

When brewing coffee, you need two basic things: water and coffee grounds. There’s a good chance your favorite barista at your local coffee shop follows the Golden Ratio. The Golden Ratio is a standard set forth by the Specialty Coffee Association. Yet, that doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone or every brewing method. If you prefer a more robust cup, you can use more beans and less water. If you like a light brew, stick to the Golden Ratio of 1:18 (coffee to water). The brewing method you choose can also change the ratio a bit. For example, if you like a thick, bold flavor with a French press, try a coffee to water ratio of 1:10. Like the beans you choose, the ratio of coffee grinds to water directly affects your brew's strength and flavor. Looking for the perfect coffee to water ratio for your manual pour-over brewer?

Espresso Single Shot vs. If you’re looking to make a latte, a cappuccino, or any other espresso-based drink, forget the Golden Ratio altogether. Standard espresso machines have a portafilter and a coffee basket that measures (usually) 58mm wide. A single shot of espresso requires approximately seven to nine grams of ground coffee and produces one fluid ounce. Let’s recap for a second … a single shot is one ounce. A double shot is two ounces. The 1:2 water ratio refers to a standard espresso shot. The perfect coffee to water ratio for a lungo is about 1:3. Here's a quick recap of some of the most popular espresso-based drinks. Macchiato: espresso shot topped with a bit of foam (Yes, really. However, there are some ways to preserve your coffee and make it last longer. Some add extra beans to make it stronger; some use fewer grounds or more water to give their coffee more tea-like consistency.

Let’s say you have a ten-ounce can of whole coffee beans. When you grind them, you’ll end up with ten-ounces of coffee grounds. Keep in mind that when we say two cups per day, we’re talking about two six-ounce cups (which are pretty small) brewed using the Golden Ratio for water. If you drink more than two small cups per day or live with another coffee lover, you might want to step up your weekly purchase to a two-pound bag. Ready to try making a mocha, a macchiato, or an Americano? Every coffee drink requires a certain amount of beans, or grounds, or milk, or foam. Yes, there are guidelines and recommended ratios for water, coffee grounds, and other additives, such as milk, creamer, or foam. If you like it stronger, make it stronger! If you like it thinner or weaker, brew it with less intensity. Coffee is a personal choice, so don’t let anyone tell you how you should be drinking it.
