Young people commit crimes as a result of peer pressure, and those who live below the poverty line, due to poverty. Some crimes are committed out of greed or cruelty, and some people commit crimes for inexplicable reasons.

A bűnügyi nyomozás folyamata
The exact process is different in different countries. Also, not every investigation leads to an arrest, a trial, or a prison sentence.
- Report - bejelentés: A person tells the police about a possible crime. This is called reporting a crime.
- Suspicion - gyanú: The police think that a person may have committed a crime. This person is called a suspect. Suspicion is not proof. A suspect is not automatically guilty.
- Investigation - nyomozás: The police look for information about the crime. They may speak to people, check records, visit a place, or collect evidence.
- Evidence - bizonyíték: Evidence is information that may show what happened. It can include fingerprints, photographs, messages, videos, objects, or documents.
- Search and questioning - házkutatás és kihallgatás: The police may search a person, building, vehicle, or other place. In some cases, they need a search warrant, which is official permission from a court.
- Arrest - letartóztatás: The police arrest a person when they officially take control of them because they believe the person may have committed a crime.
- Charge - vádemelés: A charge is an official statement that a person is accused of a crime.
- Bail and first hearing - óvadék és első meghallgatás: A court may decide whether the defendant can leave custody while waiting for the case.
- Plea - vallomás vagy jogi nyilatkozat: The defendant tells the court whether they are guilty or not guilty.
- Trial - tárgyalás: A trial is a formal court process. The prosecution presents its evidence, and the defence answers the accusations.
- Verdict - ítélet: A verdict is the court’s decision. Guilty or convicted means that the court decides that the defendant committed the crime.
- Sentence or punishment - büntetés: If the defendant is found guilty, the judge gives a sentence.
- Jail or prison - fogda vagy börtön: A jail is usually a local place where people stay for a short time. A prison is usually a place where people serve longer sentences after they have been convicted.
- Appeal - fellebbezés: An appeal is a request for a higher court to review a decision made by a lower court.
Report → suspicion → investigation → evidence → arrest → charge → first hearing → plea → trial → verdict → sentence or punishment → jail, prison, or another punishment → appeal.
In some cases, the defendant pleads guilty and there is no full trial. In other cases, the police do not make an arrest, or the prosecutor does not bring charges.
A büntetés célja és típusai
Authorities have to enforce laws and prevent chaos in society. Criminals have to be deterred from committing crimes again. Society has to be protected from dangerous criminals, who should be tried to be reformed.
For minor offences, for first time offenders and young offenders there is community service (society also benefits from it). Sometimes they have to pay a fine or get a suspended sentence.
For more serious crimes, people have to serve time in prison (imprisonment), they might get a life sentence (sometimes they are set free for good behaviour).
| Büntetés | Angol kifejezés | Jelentés |
|---|---|---|
| közmunka | community service | A társadalom javára végzett munka. |
| pénzbírság | fine | Pénzösszeg, amelyet büntetésként kell megfizetni. |
| felfüggesztett büntetés | suspended sentence | Olyan büntetés, amelynek végrehajtását meghatározott feltételek mellett felfüggesztik. |
| szabadságvesztés | imprisonment, prison sentence | Börtönben letöltendő büntetés. |
| életfogytig tartó büntetés | life sentence | A very long prison sentence, sometimes followed by release for good behaviour. |
| próbaidő | probation | Felügyelet mellett, bizonyos feltételek teljesítésével letöltött büntetés. |
A büntetéssel kapcsolatos fontos igék: to punish somebody for something - megbüntetni valakit valamiért; to fine somebody - pénzbírságra büntetni valakit; to pay a fine for something - pénzbírságot fizetni valamiért; to send somebody to prison - börtönbe küldeni valakit; to sentence somebody to something - valamire ítélni valakit; to be behind bars - börtönben lenni; to serve time for something - börtönbüntetést letölteni valamiért.
A halálbüntetés eltörlése
It isn’t right to take away a person’s life, and new evidence may come up proving that the victim was innocent. It is not a good deterrent either, because crime statistics are not better in countries where capital punishment still exists.
Yet, a lot of people would like to restore capital punishment (especially when a terrible crime has been committed).
