A legfontosabb változások: a Present Simple általában Past Simple, a Past Simple Past Perfect, a Present Perfect Past Perfect, a Present Continuous Past Continuous, a will pedig would lesz.
John mondta: "I'm going to the store."
She asked: “Are you coming with me?”
I’ll go to London - Mary says.
Mary says (that) she will go to London.
I have three brothers - Peter said.
Peter said (that) he has/had three brothers.
She said that we would do a test next time.
She asked if we had done our homework.
She told us to go to page 85.
A reported speech átalakításának fő lépései
1. A reporting verb kiválasztása
A tell előtt mindig közvetlen objektum, például me, you, him, her áll.
She said that she couldn’t drive.
She told me that she couldn’t drive.
A say után állhat közvetlenül a reported clause vagy a that kötőszóval bevezetett mellékmondat, míg a tell után kötelező a személyt jelölő tárgy: She told me that she was tired.
- say something - mondani valamit
- say good morning/good night - jó reggelt vagy jó éjszakát kívánni
- say one’s prayers - elmondani az imáit
- say a few words - mondani pár szót
- tell the truth - megmondani az igazat
- tell a lie - hazudni
- tell somebody the time - megmondani valakinek az időt
- tell a story - elmondani egy történetet
- tell a secret - elárulni egy titkot
- tell somebody the way - útbaigazítást adni valakinek
Gyakori reporting verbek és szerkezeteik
| Reporting verb | Követő szerkezet | Példa |
|---|---|---|
| to tell | direkt objektum + infinitív | She told me to finish my homework. |
| to ask | direkt objektum + infinitív | He asked her to help him. |
| to advise | direkt objektum + infinitív | The doctor advised me to rest for a few days. |
| to warn | direkt objektum + infinitív | She warned us not to go into the forest. |
| to suggest | gerundium (-ing form) | He suggested going to the park. |
| to explain | that + mellékmondat | She explained that she couldn’t attend the meeting. |
| to say | that + mellékmondat | He said that he would arrive late. |
| to recommend | gerundium (-ing form) | They recommended taking the earlier train. |
| to insist | gerundium vagy that | She insisted on coming with us. |
| to agree | infinitív | He agreed to help me with my project. |
| to promise | infinitív | She promised to call me later. |
| to refuse | infinitív | He refused to apologize for his mistake. |
| to apologize | prepozíció + gerundium | He apologized for being late. |
| to admit | gerundium vagy that | She admitted that she had made a mistake. |
| to deny | gerundium vagy that | He denied that he had stolen the money. |
| to encourage | direkt objektum + infinitív | They encouraged me to apply for the position. |
| to forbid | direkt objektum + infinitív | The teacher forbade us to use our phones during the exam. |
2. A személyes névmások módosítása
A személyes névmásokat mindig a megváltozott beszédhelyzethez kell igazítani. Az I például he vagy she lehet, a we gyakran they lesz, a you pedig a szövegkörnyezettől függően I, we, he, she vagy they lehet.
| Közvetlen beszéd | Függő beszéd | Példa |
|---|---|---|
| I | he / she | I am hungry. → He said he was hungry. |
| we | they | We need more time. → They said they needed more time. |
| you | I / we / he / she / they | You should come with me. → She told me I should come with her. |

Present Simple → Past Simple
“I clean the windows every month.”
She said she cleaned the windows every month.
“Peter likes listening to music.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) Peter liked/likes listening to music.
Present Continuous → Past Continuous
“I am cleaning the windows now.”
She said she was cleaning the windows at that time.
“Peter is watching TV.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) Peter was watching TV.
Simple Past → Past Perfect
“I cleaned the windows yesterday.”
She said she had cleaned the windows the day before.
“Peter left an hour ago.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) Peter had left an hour ago.
Past Continuous és Past Perfect Continuous
“I was cleaning the windows from four to six yesterday.”
She said she had been cleaning the windows from four to six the day before.
A Past Continuous általában Past Perfect Continuous lesz, ha a beszámolóban a múlt egy korábbi pontjához viszonyítjuk a folyamatot.
“I was reading while my parents were watching TV.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) she was reading while her parents were watching TV.
He said Joe was smoking when the policeman entered.
Present Perfect → Past Perfect
“I have cleaned the windows.”
She said she had cleaned the windows.
“Peter has just left.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) Peter had just left.
Present Perfect Continuous → Past Perfect Continuous
“I have been cleaning the windows for an hour.”
She said she had been cleaning the windows for an hour.
“I’ve been typing since morning.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) she had been typing since morning.
Past Perfect → Past Perfect
“After I had cleaned the windows I had a rest.”
She said after she had cleaned the windows she had had a rest.
Will → Would
“I shall clean the windows tomorrow.”
She said she would clean the windows the next day.
“Peter will be back in an hour.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) Peter would be back in an hour.
Future Continuous → Future Continuous in the Past
“I shall be cleaning the windows all day long tomorrow.”
She said she would be cleaning the windows all day long the next day.
Future Perfect → Future Perfect in the Past
“I shall have cleaned the windows by the time you come back.”
She said she would have cleaned the windows by the time you came back.
“I have a new car.”
She says she has a new car.
Let’s tell him that he’s late.
Ha a mondott állítás ma is igaz
Ha a múltban elmondott helyzet ma is érvényes, például szokásról, örök igazságról vagy állandó tulajdonságról van szó, megtartható a jelen idő.
He said that cats don’t like dogs.
He said he never gets up early.
Galilei said the Earth is round.
The teacher said, “The earth revolves around the sun.”
The teacher said (that) the earth revolves around the sun.
Peter said (that) he has/had three brothers.
A should, would, might, could, ought to, a must have, valamint több rögzült szerkezet általában változatlan marad.
A had better, used to, would rather és would prefer to szerkezeteket sem szokás visszacsúsztatni.
- should + V1
- should have + V3
- had better + V1
- would + V1
- would have + V3
- could + V1
- could have + V3
- used to + V1
- would prefer to + V1
- would rather + V1
- must + V1 „bizonyára” értelemben
Subjunctive szerkezetekben
A wish, would rather, it is time és had better típusú szerkezetekben az igeidő rendszerint nem csúszik tovább.
He said he wished you were here.
Feltételes mondatokban
A 2nd és a 3rd Conditional általában nem változik.
“If you studied more, you would pass the exam.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) if I studied more, I would pass the exam.
“If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a house.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) if she had won the lottery, she would have bought a house.
A jövőre vonatkozó első típusú feltételes mondatban azonban a jelen idejű igeidők a múltba csúszhatnak.
He said if it rained, he wouldn’t go to the garden party.
A modális segédigék változásai
| Direct speech | Indirect speech | Megjegyzés |
|---|---|---|
| can | could | Ha jelenbeli képességre vonatkozik. |
| can | would be able to | Ha jövőbeli lehetőségre vonatkozik. |
| may | might | Lehetőség vagy engedély esetén. |
| will | would | Jövő a múltban. |
| shall | should | Tanácsadás esetén. |
| shall | would | Információ kérésekor. |
| must | must / had to | Szükségesség vagy kötelezettség esetén. |
I can clean the windows.
She said she could clean the windows.
I must clean the windows.
She said she had to clean the windows.
I may clean the windows.
She said she might clean the windows.
I needn’t clean the windows.
She said she didn’t need to clean the windows.
Can
A can általában could lesz, ha jelenbeli képességre vonatkozik.
She said “I can speak Italian”.
She said (that) she could speak Italian.
Ha a can jövőbeli lehetőségre vonatkozik, would be able to is használható.
She said “I can come next Friday”.
She said (that) she would be able to go next Friday.
May
A may általában might lesz.
She said “I may speak to Margaret”.
She said (that) she might speak to Margaret.
Must
A must változása attól függ, milyen jelentést fejez ki.
Ha a must szükségességet vagy kötelezettséget jelent, gyakran had to lesz.
She said “You must be back at 11.00”.
She said (that) I should be back at 11.00.
Ha a must „bizonyára” jelentésű következtetést fejez ki, változatlan marad.
She said “He must be very handsome.”
She said (that) he must be very handsome.
Should, would, could, might és ought to
A következő modális segédigék általában nem változnak: should, would, might, could és ought to.
She said “You should eat less.”
She said (that) I should eat less.
She said “You had better leave him alone.”
She said (that) I had better leave him alone.
|---|---|
| now | then, at that time |
| today | that day |
| tonight | that night |
| yesterday | the day before, the previous day |
| tomorrow | the next day, the following day |
| ago | before, earlier |
| the day before yesterday | two days before |
| last year/month/week | the year/month/week before, the previous year/month/week |
| next year/month/week | the following year/month/week |
| two days/months/years ago | two days/months/years before |
| this | that |
| these | those |
| here | there |
| come | go |
A „Hívlak majd holnap” mondat közvetlen beszédben így hangzik: “I’ll call you tomorrow.” Függő beszédben: He said that he would call me the next day.
Tom says, in his office: “I’ll be here again on Monday.”
Outside the office: Tom says that he will be there again on Monday.
A here és a there használata attól függ, hogy a beszámoló pillanatában ugyanazon a helyen vagyunk-e, mint az eredeti beszélő.
Függő kérdések: reported questions
A függő kérdés kétféle lehet: eldöntendő, vagyis yes/no kérdés, illetve kérdőszavas, kiegészítendő kérdés.
A that szó azonban soha nem használatos reported questionben.
Yes/no kérdések: if és whether
Kérdőszó nélküli mondatokban a két tagmondatot if vagy whether szavakkal kötjük össze.
“Do you clean the windows every day?”
She asked if/whether I cleaned the windows every day.
“Are you married?”
He asked me if/whether I was married.
“Is this my car?”, Andrew asked.
Andrew asked if/whether that car was his.
Az eredeti kérdésben szereplő segédige és fordított szórend eltűnik: Do you like coffee? helyett if I liked coffee lesz.
He asked, “Do you like coffee?”
He asked if I liked coffee.
Wh-kérdések
Ha a kérdés who, what, when, where, why, how vagy más kérdőszót tartalmaz, megtartjuk a kérdőszót, de helyreállítjuk a normál alany-állítmány sorrendet.
“When do you clean the windows?”
She asked me when I cleaned the windows.
“Where is my car?”, Andrew asked.
Andrew asked where his car was.
“How many children do you have?”
She asked me how many children I had.
“Why was he late?”
She asked me why he was late.
“Where are you going?”
She asked where I was going.
Függő kérdésben nincs kérdő szórend: nem where was my car, hanem where my car was.
Shall I és shall we típusú kérdések
A shall I és shall we típusú függő kérdéseknél különösen fontos, hogy whether is használható, ha infinitíves megoldást választunk.
“Where shall I sit?”, the girl wondered.
The girl wondered where she should sit.
The girl wondered where to sit.
“Shall we help you?”, the boy asked.
The boy asked if/whether they should help him.
The boy asked whether to help him.
Csak a whether to szerkezet használható, az if to nem.
Felszólítások, kérések és tiltások
Felszólító mondatból általában to + infinitive szerkezet lesz. Ilyenkor nincs hagyományos igeidő-csúsztatás.
A szerkezet: ask/tell somebody (not) to + V1.
Felszólítás
“Clean the windows.”
She told me to clean the windows.
“Open the window, please.”
She asked/told/commanded me to open the window.
“Open the door!”
He told me to open the door.
Felszólítást nem tolmácsolunk a said igével.
Kérés
“Will you clean the windows, please?”
She asked me to clean the windows.
“Please, sit down.”
She asked me to sit down.
Tiltás
“Don’t clean the windows.”
She told me not to clean the windows.
“Don’t speak Hungarian in class, please.”
The teacher told us not to speak Hungarian in class.
A tiltás szerkezete: somebody + not to do something.
“Don’t lie.”
He told me not to lie.
Let’s típusú mondatok
A Let’s típusú javaslatot általában suggest + -ing szerkezettel adjuk vissza.
Jack suggested spending the night in the theatre.
Feltételes mondatok reported speechben
A jövőre vonatkozó első típusú feltételes mondatban az igeidők a múltba csúszhatnak.
He said if it rained, he wouldn’t go to the garden party.
Ha a feltételes mondat egyik része felszólító, kétféle megoldás is lehetséges.
“Look at this girl if you want to see something pretty.”
He told me to look at that girl if I wanted to see something pretty.
He said if I wanted to see something pretty, I was to look at that girl.
A 2nd és a 3rd Conditional általában változatlan marad.
“If you studied more, you would pass the exam.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) if I studied more, I would pass the exam.
“If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a house.” - Mary said.
Mary said (that) if she had won the lottery, she would have bought a house.

She told that..., hanem She told me that....
- A say után nem kötelező személyt megnevezni: She said that she was tired.
- Függő kérdésben nem marad meg a kérdő szórend: She asked where I was going, nem pedig where was I going.
- Yes/no kérdésben if vagy whether szükséges.
- A that nem használatos reported questionben.
- Felszólítás után általában to + infinitive áll.
- Tiltásban not to + infinitive szerepel.
- A felszólítást nem said igével adjuk vissza.
- Azonosítsd a reporting verbet.
- Ellenőrizd, hogy a reporting verb múlt időben áll-e.
- Igazítsd a személyes névmásokat az új beszédhelyzethez.
- Ha szükséges, csúsztasd vissza az igeidőt.
- Változtasd meg az idő- és helyhatározókat.
- Yes/no kérdésben használj if vagy whether kötőszót.
- Felszólításban használj to + infinitive szerkezetet.
- Tiltásban használj not to + infinitive szerkezetet.
