Christmas, which is celebrated on December 25, is one of the biggest celebrations of the year in many countries around the world. Christmas is a very important day for the members of the Christian religion because it commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ.
Many countries around the world share certain holidays, such as New Year’s Day, Easter and Christmas, but not every country celebrates them in the same ways or even on the same day.
Family celebrations and holidays
We celebrate birthdays, namedays, wedding anniversaries, March 15, Easter, Whitsun, Mother’s Day, August 20, October 23, All Soul’s Day, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Family celebrations are important opportunities to spend time together, exchange gifts and preserve customs and traditions.
We celebrate our birthdays with the whole family. We buy presents for the celebrated and buy or bake a cake. If someone has a bigger birthday like the 18th or the 30th one, we organise a party or another surprise to him/her.
Namedays aren’t celebrated, for example, in English-speaking countries. In Hungary namedays are almost as important as birthdays and are celebrated in all families. People get presents too, but they are not as big as a birthday present.
Christmas and its religious meaning
Christmas is one of the most important holidays in England and in many other countries. It is celebrated every year on the 24th, 25th and 26th of December. This holiday is mainly a family celebration.
Christmas is a very important day for the members of the Christian religion because it commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. At church services around the world, people retell the story of the birth of Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem.
Most people don’t know what we celebrate at Christmas. Unfortunately this holiday is mostly about business, shopping, lights and people don’t know why they do all this. In fact we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the saviour of men.
However, in fact Jesus Christ was not born in this time of the year, we celebrate his birth in December. He is the Son of God who came to Earth, preached and healed all kinds of diseases and illnesses. He died for our sins but three days later he resurrected.
For certain people, Christmas also has a religious meaning. They remember the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is an opportunity to spend time together and gain new energy for the next year.
A karácsonyi időszak és az előkészületek
In many countries the Christmas season actually lasts for almost a month. Streets, squares, homes and shops are decorated and illuminated everywhere. During the Advent season, people prepare for Christmas.
They decorate their homes, bake cookies and buy presents. In a lot of cities, there are Christmas markets where people can drink mulled wine and eat traditional food. The atmosphere is usually calm and festive.
A hónapot a gyerekek számára az adventi kalendárium, és a mostanra már hazánkban is népszerű elf on the shelf játék könnyíti meg, melynek során a gyerekek egy rosszcsont házi manó csínyeivel találkoznak minden nap.

Christmas in Hungary
At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is a holiday full of traditions. The most important day is Christmas Eve, December 24, when the family comes together for the Christmas dinner.
In Hungary the Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve. In addition to the usual decorations, Hungarians also put fondant candies on and under the tree.
Typical Hungarian Christmas dishes include: fish soup or bouillon, stuffed cabbage, roast turkey with stuffing, and the famous poppy seed or walnut rolls, which is a traditional Hungarian pastry, mostly eaten during the winter holidays.
It is basically a kind of sweet bread, known as ‘beigli’ in Hungary. During the last few decades other variants (such as chestnut, plum jam, prune, or even cocoa) have become popular, too.
A karácsonyfát december 24-én, szenteste díszítik fel. A hagyományos ételek közé tartozik a halászlé, a töltött káposzta, a sült pulyka töltelékkel, valamint a mákos és diós bejgli.
The Christmas tree is decorated before the dinner with sweets, brightly coloured lights and glass ornaments, and Christmas presents are placed under it. At midnight lots of families go to church for the midnight service.
According to the Hungarian tradition, the Christmas presents are brought by baby Jesus, although some families (who belong to other religions or atheists) follow the Santa Claus tradition, which was promoted also by the communist government that ruled until 1990.
Christmas is the most popular holiday in Hungary. Families put up a Christmas tree and decorate it. They have a big dinner. They generally eat fish soup. The little Jesus puts gifts under the Christmas tree: toys and books.
Christmas in Great Britain
Most people are on holiday in the UK and stay at home with their families on Christmas day, the main day for Christmas celebrations in Britain, when the family members gather to have a Christmas dinner at midday.
During the weeks before Christmas, people send cards and go to Carol services and put up Christmas decorations in their homes. In Britain people also decorate Christmas trees, just like in Hungary.
In Britain people also decorate Christmas trees, just like in Hungary. Children sing carols for sweeties in the streets. Santa Claus puts the presents for the kids in their stockings.
Christmas would not be Christmas without the traditional roast turkey at the table. In England Christmas Eve is the time for the annual office party and many English people go to a midnight mass, while others go to church on the morning of Christmas Day.
Brit karácsonyi hagyományok
There is one very British Christmas ritual, which is watching the Queen’s message on TV. The tradition began in 1932 when King George V read a special speech written by Rudyard Kipling.
The broadcast was an enormous success. Queen Elizabeth II continued the tradition until her death. Every year she broadcasted her message on Christmas Day, and it was heard by millions of people all over the world.
In England most people watched or listened to it after their Christmas Dinner! This year it is King Charles III to deliver the speech for the first time in history.
Pulling a Christmas cracker is also a popular British tradition. But what is a Christmas cracker? Christmas crackers are tubes made of brightly coloured paper.
When pulled apart, it makes a pop sound. Crackers usually contain a small gift, a paper hat and a joke. Crackers are famous for their very bad jokes!
The party hats look like crowns, similar to the ones worn by the Wise Men. There is normally a cracker next to each plate on the Christmas dinner table.
Christmas in the United States
Just like in the UK, Christmas in the USA is observed on the 25th of December. Here the festive season begins on the fourth Thursday in November, just after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Christmas Eve in the USA is not an official holiday, which means that most people have to work. However, many workplaces hold Christmas parties and celebrations.
After dinner on Christmas Eve, children go to bed early but not before hanging up their stockings on the fireplace or the end of their bed to be filled with gifts by Santa Claus.
On the following morning, children wake up to look for their presents in their stockings and under the Christmas tree. Americans decorate Christmas tree with strings of popcorn.
They also like decorating their houses with electric lights. Santa Claus puts the presents for the kids in their stockings.
Christmas in Australia
Christmas in Canada
Boxing Day
Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It is also a holiday in many other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations.
It is usually celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day. In some countries the public holiday is moved to the next weekday if 26 December is a Saturday or Sunday.
It is based on a long custom of giving gifts to poor people. Boxing Day is an old custom going back to the Middle Ages.
December 26th: rich people give presents to their servants in boxes.

This day is celebrated both in Great Britain and in the United States.
