Karácsonyi angol tételek: brit karácsonyi szokások, ételek és hasznos szókincs

Az angol karácsonyi tétel legfontosabb témái a karácsony eredete, a brit ünnepi szokások, a karácsonyi dekorációk, az ajándékozás, Father Christmas alakja, a karácsonyi ételek, a Boxing Day, valamint a Christmashez kapcsolódó alapvető angol szavak és kifejezések.

Christmas is one of the most important holidays in England and in many other countries. This holiday is mainly a family celebration. For certain people, Christmas also has a religious meaning. They remember the birth of Jesus Christ.

A karácsony eredete és vallási jelentése

Christmas, which is celebrated on December 25, is one of the biggest celebrations of the year in many countries around the world. Christmas is a very important day for the members of the Christian religion because it commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. At church services around the world, people retell the story of the birth of Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem.

Most people don’t know what we celebrate at Christmas. Unfortunately this holiday is mostly about business, shopping, lights and people don’t know why they do all this. In fact we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the saviour of men.

However, in fact Jesus Christ was not born in this time of the year, we celebrate his birth in December. He is the Son of God who came to Earth, preached and healed all kinds of diseases and illnesses. He died for our sins but three days later he resurrected.

The word Christmas, itself, comes from the Old English name ‘Cristes Maesse’. The first recorded observance occurred in Rome in AD360, but it wasn’t until AD 440 that the Christian Church fixed a celebration date of 25 December.

In many countries the Christmas season actually lasts for almost a month. Streets, squares, homes and shops are decorated and illuminated everywhere. Many of the traditional Christmas customs originate in pagan festivals.

Thousands of years ago people were often afraid of the long, cold winter nights. When the days finally became longer, people celebrated the return of the sun by making bonfires, feasting on large meals and exchanging gifts. After the birth of Christ, many of these traditions were combined with the celebration of Christmas.

Karácsonyi dekorációk és a karácsonyfa

Christmas decorations have very early origins. Holly, ivy and mistletoe are associated with rituals going back to the Dark Ages. The custom of kissing under a sprig of mistletoe comes from an ancient pagan tradition.

It was considered sacred by the British Druids. Among the Romans, it was symbol of peace, and, it was said that when enemies met under it, they discarded their arms and declared a truce. From this comes our custom of kissing under the mistletoe. England was the first country to use it during the Christmas season.

During the Advent season, people prepare for Christmas. They decorate their homes, bake cookies and buy presents. In a lot of cities, there are Christmas markets where people can drink mulled wine and eat traditional food.

In Hungary the Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve. In addition to the usual decorations, Hungarians also put fondant candies on and under the tree.

This Christmas tree has already been decorated.

We always decorate the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. We put a star on top of the Christmas tree. The living room looks beautiful with all the Christmas lights.

Karácsony Nagy-Britanniában

Christmas in Britain is mainly a family celebration. Most people are on holiday in the UK and stay at home with their families on Christmas day, the main day for Christmas celebrations in Britain, when the family members gather to have a Christmas dinner at midday.

Christmas is one of the most important holidays in England and in many other countries. It is celebrated every year on the 24th, 25th and 26th of December.

During the weeks before Christmas, people send cards and go to Carol services and put up Christmas decorations in their homes.

A családok összejöttek, pihentek, játszottak, énekeltek. Christmas is an opportunity to spend time together and gain new energy for the next year.

On Christmas Eve, the family comes together. Lots of families have dinner together, for example fish, goose or other typical dishes. After that, the presents are opened. Children especially look forward to this moment. People often sing songs or read a Christmas story.

Ajándékozás és a karácsonyi zokni

Groups of singers often sing carols on Christmas Eve to their neighbours, and children hang a stocking on the fireplace or at the foot of their bed for Santa Claus (also named Father Christmas) to fill. Presents for the family are placed under the Christmas tree.

Children are excited because they are looking forward to this beautiful holiday.

The old man with the sack, ‘Father Christmas’ (or ‘Santa Claus’) has become the human face of Christmas. There are pictures of the old man with long white beard, red coat, and bag of toys everywhere.

Children believe that he brings them presents the night before Christmas and many children up to the age of 7 or 8 really believe this is true. It is said that he lives near the North Pole, and arrives through the sky on a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

He comes into houses down the chimney at midnight and places presents for the children in socks or bags by their beds or in front of the family Christmas tree. In return, children leave some snack and milk for the hungry and thirsty Santa.

Father Christmas is based on a real person, St. Nicholas, which explains his other name ‘Santa Claus’ which comes from the Dutch ‘Sinterklaas’.

Nicholas was a Christian leader from Myra (in modern-day Turkey) in the 4th century AD. He was very shy, and wanted to give money to poor people without them knowing about it.

It is said that one day, he climbed the roof of a house and dropped a purse of money down the chimney. It landed in the stocking which a girl had put to dry by the fire!

This may explain the belief that Father Christmas comes down the chimney and places gifts in children’s stockings.

Secret Santa

Brits play Secret Santa in schools and workplaces. As it is Secret, the name of the gift giver should not be revealed. Also, you can only open your present at Christmas.

Karácsonyi énekek, pantomimek és képeslapok

Among children at Christmas time pantomimes are very popular: song and dance dramatisations of well-known fairy tales which encourage audience participation.

Groups of singers often sing carols on Christmas Eve to their neighbours.

Here in England, the older generation still send christmas cards to their relatives and friends, but what was really strange for me is that colleagues give cards for each other as well.

Christmas crackers

The christmas crackers are usuallay pulled at the christmas dinner. This is made of paper, which can consists a paper crown, a poem or a joke and a little gift.

Before or during dinner, everybody gets a cracker, you pull it, then you will hear a popping sound, and the gifts fall out.

Pulling a Christmas cracker is also a popular British tradition. Christmas crackers are tubes made of brightly coloured paper. When pulled apart, it makes a pop sound.

Crackers usually contain a small gift, a paper hat and a joke. Crackers are famous for their very bad jokes!

The party hats look like crowns, similar to the ones worn by the Wise Men. There is normally a cracker next to each plate on the Christmas dinner table.

Christmas dinner consists traditionally of a roast turkey, goose or chicken with stuffing and roast potatoes. This is followed by mince pies and Christmas pudding, which might contain coins or lucky charms for children.

A tipikus karácsonyi étel: sült pulyka, köretnek: krumpli krokett, krumpli püré, sütőben sült krumpli, zöldségek: főtt répa és kelbimbó, sült paszternák, párolt káposzta, baconbe tekert sült koktél virsli, töltelék, szósz: gravy, vörösáfonya.

The typical christmas dinner is roast turkey, potatoe croquettes, mash potatoe, roast potatoe, cooked carrot and brussels sprouts, roast parsnips, braised cabbage, cocktail sausage in bacon, gravy and cranberry sauce.

In Hungary, fish soup is a traditional Christmas dish but in the UK and in the USA it is not.

Mince pie

Usually people misunderstand, as they think mince meat is made of pork, beef meat. So they are expecting a meat pie, but it is not.

Készült húsos pite a szegényeknek, amibe nyelvet, pacalt, faggyút, borjúlábat tettek, és létezett persze luxus kivitelben is,amelyhez sült marhahúst használtak.

Érdekessége, hogy alkoholt is használtak a pitékhez, ezzel tartósították.

Yorkshire-ben úgy tartották, ha valaki a karácsonyi tizenketted minden napján megeszik egy húsos pitét, szerencséje lesz.

Christmas pudding

Christmas pudding, which might contain coins or lucky charms for children, is traditionally served after the main course.

This is the second most important British christmas dessert, which is consumed on the 25th December as part of the Christmas menu. This dessert is similar to a fruit bread.

It is extremely heavy, rich, made of alcohol and it is full of dried fruits. It is aged for several months to have the best flavour for christmas.

Természetesen a legismertebb angol, karácsonyi étel a karácsonyi puding (Christmas Pudding) vagy más néven szilvapuding (plum pudding), aminek egyébként semmi köze nincs a szilvához.

A 19. század előtt a “plum” (szilva) szó mazsolát jelentett.

Ma már nálunk is ismert, hogy régen textilbe csomagolva főztékórákon át, amiért gyakran „bag-pudding-nak”,vagyis „szatyor-pudingnak”is nevezték.

Ma a karácsonyi pudingot Szent András napjához (november 30.) legközelebb esővasárnap kezdik el készíteni. Ezt a vasárnapot „Stir-up Sunday”-nek, azaz „keverővasárnapnak” hívják.

A családok összejöttek, pihentek, játszottak, énekeltek.

Eredete a rómaiak idejére nyúlik vissza, ám a viktoriánus időkben élte aranykorát.

My grandmother always makes gingerbread and fruitcake for Christmas.

Karácsonyi üzenetek és televíziós hagyományok

Another traditional feature of Christmas afternoon is the Queen’s Christmas Message to the nation, broadcast on radio and television.

There is one very British Christmas ritual, which is watching the Queen’s message on TV. The tradition began in 1932 when King George V read a special speech written by Rudyard Kipling.

The broadcast was an enormous success. Queen Elizabeth II continued the tradition until her death. Every year she broadcasted her message on Christmas Day, and it was heard by millions of people all over the world.

In England most people watched or listened to it after their Christmas Dinner!

Boxing Day

The day after Christmas is known in Britain as Boxing Day, which takes its name from a former custom of giving a Christmas Box - a gift of money or food inside a box - to the deliverymen and trades people who served during the year.

This tradition survives in the custom of tipping the milkman, postman, dustmen and others of good service at Christmas time.

Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It is also a holiday in many other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations.

It is based on a long custom of giving gifts to poor people. It is usually celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day.

Boxing Day is an old custom going back to the Middle Ages.
