A Temze és London fejlődése

This is the River Thames. It is almost 346 kilometres long, and is the second longest river in Great Britain. It flows through London, and it’s this part of the river that most tourists see.

But there’s more to the Thames than a trip down the river. The Romans built a settlement on the River Thames, and over the centuries it grew into the City of London, with a huge port.

Ships from around the world brought food, goods and people to the capital. But by the 1980s, most of the docks had closed and the area became run-down.

A lot of money has been invested in this huge riverside area. And today it’s known as ‘Docklands’. The old warehouses are now attractive apartments. There are new office buildings, shopping centres and leisure facilities, too.

People enjoy living and working by the river. People also enjoy living on the water!

Élet egy lakóhajón

This is a houseboat on the Thames.

Nick: Hi, Alistair.
Alistair: Hey, Nick, welcome aboard.
Nick: Thank you. So why do you live on a houseboat?
Alistair: I love being close to the water. And it’s a brilliant place to invite friends over.

Nick: What’s it like to live on a boat?
Alistair: In the summer, it’s beautiful. And in the winter, it’s a bit cold.
Nick: Could you give me a tour?
Alistair: Please. Follow me. So this is the kitchen. The bedroom.
Nick: I like it.

Nick: What’s the best thing about living on the river?
Alistair: For me, it’s being so close to nature. And it’s really cheap.
Nick: Is there anything you miss about living on dry land?
Alistair: I miss not being able to grow my own food and not having a garden.

Nick: Do you think you will ever move?
Alistair: Only if I have to leave London. It’s a really brilliant place to live in the city.

A Temze változásai és a klímaváltozás

The Thames has seen a lot of changes over the years. But perhaps the biggest change is still to come.

This image is of the River Thames frozen over. It’s not a real photograph. It’s been created digitally. It shows the effect climate change may have on the river if temperatures drop significantly.

They were created by two illustrators: Didier Madoc-Jones and Robert Graves.

Nick: Didier, Tell us about this exhibition.
Didier: We wanted to create postcards from the future - well-known views of London - to show people how it might look with the effects of climate change.

Nick: Why does this one show the Thames frozen over?
Didier: Well some scientists think we might experience a new mini ice age with very cold winters and in the summer we’d experience flooding due to melting ice sheets.

Nick: Do you think that could really happen?
Didier: Nobody really knows. The point of our exhibition was to get people thinking about climate change and the future of London.

The River Thames has changed over the centuries, and will continue to do so. But hopefully it will always be here for both local people and tourists to enjoy and explore.

London rövid története

The Romans founded London about 50 AD. Its name is derived from the Celtic word Londinios, which means the place of the bold one.

After they invaded Britain in 43 AD the Romans built a bridge across the Thames. They later decided it was an excellent place to build a port.

The water was deep enough for ocean going ships but it was far enough inland to be safe from Germanic raiders. Around 50 AD Roman merchants built a town by the bridge. So London was born.

By the 2nd century the Roman London had a population of 60,000.

During the 7th century the Anglo-Saxons developed a new settlement about 1,000 yards upstream from old London, which is now known as Covent Garden.

This blossoming city on the Thames river suffered repeated attacks from the Vikings until 886 when Alfred the Great, made peace and the Saxon city of Aldwych was established, which is now in the Modern city of Westminster.

The battle for London continued until 1066 when William the Conqueror, who was the Duke of Normandy, was crowned King of England in the new Westminster Abbey.

The new King granted the citizens of London special privileges and built the Tower of London in the south-east section of the city to control their lifestyle.

London continued to grow over the next 600 years through civil wars, the plague known as the Black Death, the Peasants Revolt, floods and other religious upheavals.

Then in 1666 the city was almost completely destroyed by The Great Fire of London.

In the 18th century London became the world’s largest city and the first rapid transit system was built to handle its growing population.

The rest, as they say, is history. The city is now a sprawling area of over 659 square miles, which has survived two 20th century World Wars and a number of internal catastrophes.

Közlekedés Londonban

London is a very busy city with lots of traffic and a well-oiled public transport system.

Besides the symbolic red double-decker buses there are several train lines and eleven underground lines too. The London underground is called “the tube”.

Budapesthez hasonlóan Londonban is sokan használják a tömegközlekedést, mert a nagyvárosokban gyakoriak a közlekedési és környezeti problémák.

Would you like to come with me for a trip on Sunday?

Trip? Where?
To the hills just outside the town. There is a look-out tower there with a magnificent view.
That sounds nice. But how can we get there?

Walk, of course.
O.K That sounds fine.
Are there any restaurants on the way?

I don’t think so. We’d better take some sandwiches and something to drink with us.
And what if it rains on Sunday?
We’ll go to the museum instead.

Képleírás: a divat szerepe az emberek életében

Ezek a képek a divattal kapcsolatosak. A divat fontos szerepet játszhat az emberek életében, de nem mindenki tartja magát kifejezetten divatos embernek.

I should confess straightaway that I don’t know much about fashion, but I know a whole lot about clothes. I have been wearing them almost daily for as long as I can remember.

Clothes are important. We dress in different outfits for the roles we play, the places we go, the company we keep. I think it is not important to be a very fashionable person.

But one should move with the time. Fashion makes our life colorful and changes our life with the time or according to the time. It makes me feel good whenever I follow fashion and trends.

So, Fashion is not a new thing in the world as it is found everywhere. For some women and some men, fashion plays an important part for them.

Good shopping for a new outfit can brighten a mood and gives so much pleasure. Some people remember you by your dress.

For example: When you met my mother, you wore that shirt or I saw her in my friend’s birthday party.

Fashion is an artistic expression of what is inside. I believe that fashion has the ability to transform you into a new personality, a different person.

Most of the styles are applied by teenagers. They always want something unique and new style that differs from others.

Therefore, they create a new line of fashion trends to keep their own identity as a teenager. So, Fashion has its own importance in world.
